Reverend Stanley T. Nakowicz, 71 pastor of Our Lady of Loreto Parish, East Providence died on December 3, 2012.
Born in Providence, son of the late Walter and Vera (Ricci) Nakowicz, he attended Graniteville Elementary School and
La Salle Academy.
In preparation for the priesthood, he studied at Our Lady of Providence Seminary in Warwick, RI and at St. Mary’s Seminary and University in Baltimore, MD. He was ordained a priest at SS. Peter and Paul Cathedral in Providence on June 3, 1967 by the Most Reverend Bernard M. Kelly, J.C.D.
Upon ordination to the priesthood, Father was assigned as assistant pastor of St. Mary Parish, Crompton. In 1970 he joined the faculty of Our Lady of Providence Preparatory Seminary and remained there until it closed in 1989. He was Dean of Students, taught Senior Religion and Latin and was the librarian. He received a Master’s Degree in Library Science from the University of Rhode Island in 1975. During the summers he served at St. Mary Parish, Newport and St. Patrick Parish, Harrisville and was director of Mater Spei Day Camp, Chepachet. While a faculty member at the seminary, he was appointed pastor of Our Lady of Loreto, East Providence where he continued to serve until his death.
On October 4, 1990 he was appointed Executive Editor of The Providence Visitor and served until December 31, 2006. He also was elected to the Priest Grievance Board, Priests’ Personnel Board and the Council of Priests.
He leaves a sister, Ann O’Brien of North Providence, a nephew, Robert P. O’Brien and his wife Susan and many cousins.
Calling hours will be held on Sunday, December 9, 2012 from 4-7 PM in Our Lady of Loreto Church, 346 Waterman Avenue, East Providence concluding with a prayer service at 7:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered for the repose of his soul on Monday, December 10, 2012 at 10:00 AM in Our Lady of Loreto Church. Burial will be private.
