(PROVIDENCE, R.I.)-The Most Rev. Thomas J. Tobin, Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence, today announced the appointment of a senior fundraising executive with more than 20 years of leadership experience with Church affiliated and non-profit organizations as director of Stewardship and Development.
Robert J. Corcoran, Jr., recently served as director of development with the Holy Cross Family Ministries in North Easton, Massachusetts, assumed his new duties this morning. He replaces Tony Gwiazdowski who served in the same capacity since August of 1996.
“I am pleased to appoint Bob Corcoran to this critical position in the Diocese,” said Bishop Tobin. “A primary mission of the Catholic Church is to provide works of mercy to our neighbors in the greatest of need. Through Bob’s efforts and that of the clergy, religious and laity throughout the diocese, the Church will continue its efforts to raise the necessary resources to bring hope and touch the lives of those who have nowhere else to turn for assistance.”
“I am grateful to Bishop Tobin for offering me this opportunity to join a group of dedicated professionals, work with pastors and the good people of the Diocese of Providence together to find the resources to fund a mission to help people in need,” said Corcoran. “Now, more than ever, we need to lift each other up, help those that need a hand, and build a strong and lasting legacy we can pass along to our children and the community at-large.”
Corcoran’s previous assignments have included leadership positions in fundraising and development with the Archdiocese of Boston and with fundraising consulting organizations supporting church-based clients. Corcoran’s work with Catholic organizations focused on growing annual campaigns. Prior to Holy Cross Family Ministries, Corcoran served as a vice president for Newport Creative Communications where he identified, cultivated, managed and retained more than $1 million in business for the firm while designing and implementing fund raising programs that met or exceeded goals.
As director of Stewardship & Development, Corcoran responsibilities include the administration, planning and coordination of office efforts such as the annual Catholic Charity Appeal, the Catholic Foundation, the Anchor of Hope Fund and the Shepherds of Hope Campaign. He will also provide support to parish and school development campaigns.
“The Diocese of Providence has long enjoyed excellent leadership in its parishes, groups, and committees across the state,” added Corcoran. “I look forward to meeting these leaders and together forging a partnership for successful fundraising into the future.”
Mr. Corcoran holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Northeastern University. He is a member of St. Raphael Parish in Medford, Massachusetts where he and wife and three children are active in an array of church and school activities.
